Internet for Rural Location

Post by Stormwatcher »

We have a cabin way out in the woods. Currently have Hughes Net Satellite. They’re horrible. Satellite or Cellular are my only options. Satellite sucks bad. Need to try Cellular. I have an old iPad Air that is on my AT&T unlimited wireless plan along with our 3 other phones. Wanted to use the iPad sim in a router but AT&T says no. They say I must get a new and separate data plan for this router. I don’t even know if cellular will work but I suspect it will. We rarely go to this cabin but I want internet when I do plus I occasionally want to monitor the security cameras. I need a router that I can flash with something like openwrt, something to trick ATT into thinking the router is the iPad and if there’s a way to block data usage, that would be a plus. What do I need? Where do I go? Help!

the thewirelesshaven.com WG3526-P would do well.

You can just tether your ipad to it if you want, or you can get a good modem for it, like the Quectel EM12G, and just put the SIM into it. Many people also change the IMEI to match their ipad. We cannot support that command here, as it is vaguely against FCC rules, but the info is on other sites.

I don't modify the imei on my modem and I use my ipad SIM in my router all the time. Post paid ipad unlimited plan.

The info on how to set this up is all over this forum, and we can guide you on it.

Maybe good to get a Cellular Tower Survey Report
Cellular Tower Survey Reports – The Wireless Haven

Can also use https://www.cellmapper.net

Would give you a better understanding of what hardware is needed
