Installing Antenna in attic

Post by busster8 »

Getting ready to move into house in the country. No traditional service provider. I have been looking at Mofi, intsyconnect, and the Wireless Joint solutions. My question is, can I place the antenna in the attic? I realize that the signal will not be as good as being outside on a roof, and I might ultimately mount them on the roof, but placing the antenna in the attic could be a solution until I am positive where I want to mount as a final solution?

100% Not a problem at all. You understand the possible losses from signal penetration, so you're good.

WHY 4G BOOSTERS ARE SO 3G :o

His equipment is a little pricy but he has a good point with keeping antenna cables short
and using PoE. You could build something like he did. The MoFi is a very low end unit

I currently have my antenna in the attic. Yes, it works and it does help improve signal strength.

The biggest problem with attic placement is the high frequency bands don't penetrate buildings very well. So you really need to get the antenna outdoors and elevated to pick up those frequencies. And of course, they usually have the higher available bandwidth. Will the attic antenna improve your signal? Yes. But it may not give you enough gain to pick the best bands. It will likely just improve the bands you already had, but don't expect miracles.

I agree with Dr-BroadBand, the Mofi is not going to give you the best speeds. I am currently using a Mofi Sim 7.

Used a parabolic grid type antenna in attics few times and able to pick up higher frequency bands. Probably due to they are such high gain. With that being said worked even better outside then shooting thru siding or shingles.
Just did this last night actually. Due have tower to put it one but super cold, ice and snow. Not even going to attempt that crazy stuff.

Update:
Just thought it would be worth mentioning when putting an antenna in the attic might have to play around with different areas in the attic. Seem odd things with doing this. Sometime where you think makes the most sense for it to be could be the worse place for it. Like have seen the other end of the house farther away from tower be a better spot for it for example. Or just moving it over like a few feet make a big difference. Sure it has something to do with the signal blocking or signal attenuation.
Honestly is over my head just thought it was was note worthy to mention this.

I agree, my experience has been the same as yours. I thought the gable vent on the end of the house nearest the tower was going to be the best spot, but turned out to be one of the worst spots.

Hey! I installed the booster from https://www.myamplifierz.com/ in a country house. The tech support specialists helped, it was not difficult. And videos on YouTube
