MOFI 4500 with EM7565 Modem

I have a Mofi 4500 with the SIM4 MC7455 modem. I am running the Mofi firmware instead of Golden Orb. Has anyone tried installing an EM7565 or a Quectel EM12-G into the Mofi using the stock Mofi firmware?

First, does the Mofi firmware support a different modem or will I need to switch to Golden Orb?

Second, what kind of performance gain can be had? The CAT 12 modems offer some additional bands which would be helpful (I am on T-Mobile) and 3 carrier aggregation. These seem like they should help improve speeds.

I understand the Mofi is limited to around 85 Mbps no matter what due to the NICs but I am not getting even close to that with the modem.

Ours is a mobile application so we cannot band lock and cannot have antennas that point in specific directions unfortunately.

Anyone who has tested this out let me know what you came up with.

Thank you!

I'm not sure modem changes are supported in the mofi firmware.

That is kind of what I thought but wanted to ask around.

How does the Golden Orb firmware compare to the Mofi firnware?

Also, any idea if there is a substantial gain from moving to the EM7565 over the MC7455 when used in the Mofi box running a different firmware?

I've never used the mofi firmware, but I'm sure its not much trouble to try it out.

Your experience with upgrading the modem will really depend on your specific situation with cell band availability and signal levels. The modem itself is much more capable. Thats an upgrade from category 4 to category 12. More carrier aggregation and higher capable speeds

I have your answer! I also started with the MOFI4500 SIM4 (MC7455). What I did is opened the MOFI, removed the MC7455, then turned it on. Then I flashed the GoldenOrb firmware that is here on the The Wireless Haven website. After I did that, I turned it on and made sure it was functioning properly. After that, I unplugged it, installed the EM7565 modem (make sure you are really careful with the pigtails as they are easily bent and you need to make sure it is centered on the pin before lightly pressing down). I plugged in the MOFI (which is technically no longer a MOFI anymore ;) with the new firmware), then the router very nicely, automatically detected the new EM7565 modem. Make sure to look up the AT Command user guide here in the forums to learn how to create different sets of bands you want it to use. By default, the EM7565 will use the "LTE ALL" which means it will be using all available bands. Which the modem likes, rather than being locked to a certain band. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Do you think this would work with a SIM7 instead of a SIM4?

Likely. Give it a try

Does this new modem EM7565 require a power supply adaptor upgrade from what is provided with the MOFI4500? If so what is recommended? Thanks!

At least 2.5A but go with 3A if you will be buying one.

Hi @MaskToMyFace ,

Is the EM7565 still working for you? Are there better modules to use almost 3 years later? I have a MOFI4500 running on ATT and its starting to run slow: Have good connection but not wanting to provide data.
Thanks in advance, Michael
