1000/2000 mW USB WiFi adapters

Post by 56387f »

Hi,

not sure if this is the best place for this topic but anyway. Some people were talking on the forum about mighty powerful WiFi - here it goes.

I was looking for a USB WiFi adapter working with older Linux kernels and those using Ralink chipset seem to fit the bill.

Checked Amazon, found several:

"Alfa AWUS036NH 2000mW 2W 802.11g/n High Gain USB Wireless G / N Long-Range WiFi Network Adapter "
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B003YJ ... UTF8&psc=1

"2000mW 2W 802.11 G/N High-Gain USB Wireless Long-Rang WiFi Network Adapter with Original Alfa Screw On Swivel 9dBi Rubber Antenna and Suction Cup Window Mount Dock
https://www.amazon.com/High-Gain-Long-R ... 810&sr=8-3

2000 mW - that's incredible :o ! I could use one to connect to my brother's router located in the nearby town just 15 miles from mine! ;)

Ok, just received one, it carries the following FCC ID: UQ2036NH
https://fccid.io/UQ2036NH?__cf_chl_jsc ... GkmOxtduSc

The FCC web page says:

Frequency Range Power Output Rule Parts Line Entry
2.412-2.462 GHz 2.4 GHz WiFi 207 mW 15C 1
2.422-2.452 GHz 2.4 GHz WiFi 204 mW 15C 2

Quite a difference 2000mW vs 200mW  On the other hand I am not sure if I would want to have a 2W transmitter sitting on my table and working 24x7 - that could be quite dangerous in many ways.

PS: Alpha network has good reputation and I don't know how this mishmash happened. I wrote a note to the seller suggesting to change the description, we will see if he does that. And it would terrific if the description for electronic devices sold on ebay and Amazon had to include FCC ID by law or some sort of regulation.

2W WiFi is unusual made by Chinese companies for their own domestic use market, which sometimes finds its way across the world. Could be a typo, but it's possible that it includes non-US bands above 11 such as 13-14 on 2G WiFi.

This's interesting. Are there 2W-3W 2.4GHz receiver/transmitter/bridge/extender/booster/etc on the market? Of course, they are (and probably even more powerful) used for drones, building repeaters, extenders, bridges etc. The great example - Ubiquiti which can cover up to 30km.
But a 2W USB 2.0 powered (0.5A max - at best, 5V, -> Ohms law P= U*I ->5*.0x5 = 2.5W at best) 2.4GHz WiFi adapter ? - I would be very interested to see one :?

Unless the usb bus can supply at least 1Amp, it would probably need an external power supply. But yeah, they are available, you can find some on Alibaba.com or AliExpress.com. Course they are not intended to be used in the US. ;)
