Bought Mofi4500 - need band 66 - suggestions for change?

Post by MarkB »

I bought a Mofi4500, (yeah I know that was a mistake) which doesn't have band 66 which is what I need. Looks like I need a cat18 or cat20 modem. Should I try to change the modem in the Mofi or just start over?

I wouldn't swap out modem, Would start out fresh and sell it. There is a market for Mofi Routers. People starting out like them.
And you don't have to get a high cat modem for band 66. This set up right here will get you band 66 with cat 6 modem same abilities as mofi. Just with better wifi
As I said before if you are using visible make sure other where able to connect with this modem. Visible seams to be finicky one to get.

Also if you are happy with your phone speeds you could just tether your phone to a router.

I found out that my Mofi has a cat4 modem and does have band 66 but it does not support carrier aggregation. My Samsung S8+ phone has a cat16 modem and supports carrier aggregation which is probably why it's so much faster.
I don't have unlimited data on my phone so tethering is not an option. What would you recommend for cat18 or cat20 modem/router setup?

Are you getting good signal on your phone inside your home? If so, a Nighthawk M1 might be the easiest route (if it isn't blocked by your carrier). It's a cat16 modem and pretty good wifi for a mobile hotspot. I think the internal antennas are even 4x4 mimo. The downside is the crappy ts9 connectors if external antennae are needed.

If you need external antennae then a Quectel Em20-g in a USB enclosure connected to any router that has a USB 3.0 port and can have goldenorb flashed to it will be great. The Wireless Haven has new 2x2 mimo antennae on the Facebook shop, both flat-panel and a sweet-looking 24" round grid.

Viper, The grid is cool! The 2x2 MIMO 15dBi panel is new too, and it's a sleeper deal, for real.

Mark, Viper has you covered. I can't really add anything new to what was already said. Unless you want a new router too instead of the usb enclosure. Then maybe go with a WG3526, but for the 4x4 MIMO you'll have to do some antenna additions, and you'll have to change the antenna internal cables (called pigtails) to a different style, called mhf4, since the modem only uses mhf4 connectors.

:)

Can't go wrong with a WG3526... Don't forget the adapter for the M.2 modem, though, since those routers have mini pci-e slots. OR get the enclosure anyway, since the 3526 has a usb3 port and having an enclosure lets you plug directly to a pc for managing the modem's firmware.

Sorry to highjack the thread.

Do you have a link to either of the antennas?
